Mandolin

Drive By nativity with the Wild Poinsettias

Mandolin is a fun instrument to play because not only can you play lead but you can also set the Rhythm and drive the ensemble to a higher performance. Possum (thats his jig band nickname) learned how to play the mandolin at the old Town School of Folk Music and is also currently studying mandolin method with Mike Marshall and classical mandolin with Caterina Lichtenburg at artistworks.com it turns out his grandfather, James William Shinkle (Bill) also played in the mandolin back in the 1920’s & 1930’s.

After leaving Montana james ended up running into an old friend back in Chicago. Who recommended he look into the Old Town School of Folk music, which is where he was introduced to the jug band blues.

The Hump Night Thumpers

He learned how to play music at the Old Town School of Folk and fell in love with Jug Band music. He got to travel to Memphis twice where the band got to play music on Beale street! Playing jug band music with the milk man and professor knockers and the rest of the gang was certainly a treat. The Jug Band ensemble class at OTSF is called the Hump Night Thumpers and has been a revolving cast for years. when you take the class you are in the band and get to play the gigs! what a great play to learn music !
